Some Repeat Observations That Gives Peru Its Personality
Today is a month of traveling for me! With my time in Peru coming to a close, I figured I’d wrap up with a quick post about some of the things I saw in Peru that stuck with me. I also wanted to take this chance to update everyone about the trip so far and my plans moving into the future.
I realize that I haven’t posted much about my drawings. Strange considering the blog is now called The Sketch Adventure. That is going to change very soon. I have one day left in Peru and I’m going to spend most of it planning. Planning the trip, planning stories, and planning when exactly these damn drawings will be released. I’m slightly disappointed with how many I have, but I am fairly happy with some of the work. So it’s time I share with the world. This week, the pictures will be up.
Small Updates
In my last full day in Cusco I came down with traveler’s diarrhea. Go figure. It wasn’t the worst thing in the world. No vomiting, which is a huge plus. But my flight back to Lima wasn’t as comfortable as it could’ve been.
Being back in Lima, I’m staying at the Kokopelli hostel that I stayed at when I first got to Lima. The wifi is good, they set up a PCR test for me, and they reunited me with the sweatshirt I left here before I started my bus tour of Peru. I took the PCR test at 10 AM, so keep your fingers crossed that I don’t test positive. One of the people I met while I was out here(an Italian fire juggler named Elizabeth) tested positive and she loved having the extra week. I’d prefer to be able to leave on time and rather not have to buy a new plane ticket.
My flight leaves Lima at 640 AM Tuesday and I’ll land in Rio on 915 AM Wednesday. I’ll have a layover in Panama and another in Sao Paulo before I get to Rio. It’s going to be a lot of traveling, but that’s the name of the game if you want to save money! Other than that, work has been good to me, I feel like my travel batteries have been nearly recharged and Rio should be a ton of fun. I’m hoping to just enjoy the beaches in Rio and possibly hit up the rainforest.
Peru In A Paragraph
Peru is… bright, giant bubble letters on brick walls. Multicolored villages latching on to the side of a mountain. Sweeping. Sweeping up dust everywhere, every day, always. Always looking for the opportunity to pass people on the road. Motorcycles passing buses, cars passing tuk-tuks, 18 wheelers passing cars, and the most perplexing of all, a cement truck passing a motorcycle. That is the first and maybe the only time I will see that in my life. No matter the size and speed, vehicles will always look to pass.
Peru is scattered stone villages with nobody to save them from crumbling away. A car alarm always going off. VW Beetles and hippie vans around every corner. The blinding bright yellow hue of Inca Cola. A brigade of big, white buses frantically darting around city centers at 4 in the morning, rushing to be filled with tired tourists. Winding roads that hug the sides of mountains – bumpy as can be. Clouds and mountains constantly caressing each other. Painted yellow rocks used as highway kilometer markers. Music with a bumping rhythm that my body will never look natural swaying to. A chicken foot in warm broth.
To me, Peru is lazy, happy street dogs of every breed you can think of. Panting, pawing, lounging, and lingering. They are homeless, but never seem to be starving. Peru is happy, well taken care of street dogs everywhere.
Goodbye, Peru
Well, gone but not forgotten. I still might post a few more Peru pieces, but for now it was great being here. Stay tuned for the photo dump coming soon!
